Ontario Nature on Instagram: "From having pet companions to birdwatching, the love for animals unites many of us 💙🐈 Yet there’s an inconvenient truth: not everyone is aware of the impact that pets have on wildlife populations. For instance, free ranging cats are one of the biggest threats to birds. Even if cats don’t hunt, their presence outside leads to undesirable consequences to birds, such as a reduction in the amount of food brought to nestlings. Whether to let pet cats roam free outside has been a long and heated debate, but we don’t have to choose. Fortunately, there are many things that pet owners can do to help keep pets and wildlife safe. Ontario Nature on Instagram: "Old-growth red pine forests, native only to North America, have been reduced to just 1.2% of their former range🌲 The cause? Historic and ongoing loss to logging, development and mining extraction and exploration. We cannot afford to lose what little persists. Yet, the world's largest remaining old-growth red pine forest faces significant threats despite long-standing promises to protect it. Wolf Lake Forest Reserve is North America’s largest remaining old-growth red pine forest, but despite promises to protect it, it continues to be threatened and degraded. Join Ontario Nature and the Wolf Lake Coalition in urging the Government of Ontario to halt mining activities in Wolf Lake Forest Reserve and add the forest to Chiniguchi Waterway Provincial Park. This is a golden opportunity to fulfill a decades-old promise and protect a critically endangered ecosystem.
